Karlskoga, Sweden (ots/PRNewswire) – Cell Impact has been very active in the Japanese fuel cell market for several years. This activity focused on developing a position for possible future flow plate production in Japan. In February 2023, a Cell Impact FormingTM demonstration line was launched in Japan in cooperation with FCC Japan Installed.
During the test period, more than 20 Japanese fuel cell and electrolyzer manufacturers visited the cell impact forming demonstration line.
“The interest was great and has led to the strengthening of existing customer relationships and to several new prospects. The demonstration phase is now complete and potential business opportunities are being evaluated with a view to the next step,” said Shigeru Nakagawa, Managing Director of Cell Impact Japan.
Scalable production technology with a green character
Once the containers with the molding unit arrived at the demonstration site, it took only 12 days to start molding the flow plates. With the innovative Cell Impact Forming, production can start in a fraction of the time compared to conventional technology.
Building a cell impact forming line requires only half the lead time. This short lead time enables production capacity to be ramped up quickly, allowing fuel cell manufacturers to respond to demand. Cell Impact Forming requires a small footprint and low profile. The plates are formed without oil or other lubricants and without post-cleaning with water. The very low energy consumption ensures, among other things, cost-efficient production. The low investment and operating costs lead to significant savings in the cell imprinting process compared to conventional technology.
Extreme precision, low life cycle costs
A special aspect of Cell Impact Forming is that the flow plates are formed in a single operation with very high precision, which is a key factor for the high quality, which in turn contributes to the high performance of the flow plate. The precision in the molding process contributes to long life and low cost. A previous long-term test sponsored by a customer has shown that the expected tool life is at least 2 million strokes, which is regarding four times longer than competing technologies. The high level of precision allows Cell Impact Forming to be used in the forming of pre-coated material, helping to achieve a quality that can potentially reduce post-coating costs.
“We are pleased to have been able to conduct this demonstration in Japan together with FCC and that the visitors were impressed by the performance, the green aspects and the scalability of Cell Impact Forming. Cell Impact Forming enables manufacturers of fuel cells and electrolysis to make their production more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly, ultimately leading to a reduction in CO₂emissions will contribute. All of this is now possible,” concluded Pär Teike, CEO of Cell Impact.
