MANCHESTER (AP) — Great Britain confirmed its place in the Davis Cup quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory in a tense series against France on Sunday, with Italy also assured of advancing.
The British started with a victory thanks to Dan Evans, who came back to beat Arthur Fils 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, before Ugo Humbert tied the series with a 7-6 (5) victory. 3-6, 7-5 against Cameron Norrie.
With this result France could still advance if they won in doubles, but Evans and Neal Skupski saved four match points to leave Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin behind 1-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6 ), in a duel that lasted almost three hours.
The British were leaders of Group B over Australia, who had already qualified, and will play the round of 16 in the city of Malaga, Spain in November.
