The last of eight prototypes of the Challenger 3 tank has rolled off the production line of the joint British-German Rheinmetall BAE Systems plant. After completing the full test cycle, it is planned to begin creating 140 vehicles by upgrading existing Challengers for the army.
A distinctive feature of the modification is the 120-mm L55A1 smoothbore gun from Rheinmetall, a new generation of modular armor made in the UK, as well as the Israeli Trophy active protection system from the Rafael corporation.
The tank is also equipped with more modern target detection and tracking systems, as well as surveillance devices. The contract is worth 800 million pounds; according to the plan, Challenger 3 will operate until 2040.
In fact, the new version of the British tank is partly an attempt to eliminate long-known shortcomings that emerged during the battles in Ukraine. So, in addition to replacing the rifled gun with separate cartridge loading, engineers plan to solve the problem of low mannerism by installing a Perkins CV12-9A engine.
At the same time, we are not talking regarding the production of fundamentally new cars, but the modernization of previously produced ones – the Challenger manufacturing plant has long been closed and given over to development. Therefore, some design flaws of these tanks will naturally “overnight” the new modification.
