The Styrian street theater festival La Strada this year once more transforms squares and streets, but also forest and an office into places of art. From July 28 to August 5, 25 productions can be seen in 162 performances in Graz, Stainz, Weiz, Leibnitz and St. Stefan ob Stainz – most of them with free admission. The festival will be opened by the artist group “Gravity & Other Myths” with “The Pulse” in the Graz Opera, it said on Monday at the program presentation.
The general theme this year is dealing with the construct of paradise, announced artistic director Werner Schrempf. Performances such as “Entrada al Paradís” on Graz’s main square with an invitation to take part in the Kranzeltanz and “In-Paradise” on the “poetic appropriation of urban space” on Karmeliterplatz are on the programme.
The forest also finds its place as a “wild paradise” at La Strada: in three projects, artists in the natural area of Kalkleiten in the municipality of Stattegg north of Graz deal with the “relationships between people and their non-human environment”.
With “Bed & Breakfast in the Forest” the artists Marta Navaridas, Alex Deutinger and Bernhard Wolf each want to invite six people aged 16 and over to spend a night together in the forest. With “Before the Trees…” the advantages of the city are brought into the forest: Nine stations with or without a guide offer a playful journey of discovery. Furthermore, the “School of Unlived Worlds” invites you to an experimental learning space.
The community art “PUTSCH” will take place in a completely different place: In a real office of the non-profit housing company (ENW) in Graz’s Theodor-Körner-Straße, an interactive theater play will be staged, in which the audience will experience a weird everyday office life as a fictitious intern should. “The Parcel Project” would also like to open up new perspectives in the field of visual art: a postal parcel on a trip around the world, which has been equipped with four cameras, provides an art installation with insights into the “world behind the click” of an online purchase.
In terms of street art, the Kaiserfeldgasse is to become a dance floor during the “Open Dance”, where international and local musicians entertain the audience with live music in the evenings from 9 p.m. In the field of puppet theater there will be “La Crisis de la Imaginación” regarding reality and the unreal for children in the Lesliehof in the Joanneum district and in the Kunsthaus Weiz. In addition, the Theater Zitadelle is coming to Graz, Leibnitz and Stainz with the new interpretation of the fairy tale “Schneeweißchen und Rosenrot” under the name “Neeweißnicht und Rosenrot”.
