The WHO estimates that more than 8 million people die prematurely from smoking each year. The nations with the most smokers are grouped into three regions. According to WHO data published by Our World in Data, the prevalence of smoking in France has increased from 34% in 2000 to 33% in 2020, while countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada and Sweden have seen their rates drop by regarding half.
