Causing pain or even swelling… The varicose vein corresponds to an abnormal dilation of the vein. It is possible to improve symptoms and prevent aggravation by adopting a healthy lifestyle. As the health insurance website explains, this involves practicing regular physical activity, protecting your legs from the sun and above all adopting a healthy diet.

While it is important to have a balanced and healthy diet, certain foods can also help alleviate symptoms. According to a recent study, this would be the case with grape seeds, which would improve the blood flow of the affected area, thereby relieving pain and discomfort. The research was conducted by researchers from Yonsei University (South Korea) published in the medical journal Medicine.

Grape seed extracts: taking two servings a day helps reduce varicose veins

As relayed by the American media Daily Mail, the study was conducted on 23 participants. The researchers compared patients who consumed grape seed extract to others who wore compression stockings. Patients taking grape seed extract consumed two servings a day. The results showed that blood flowed almost 5 cm per second faster when patients took grape seed extract.

A titre d’indication, it was two to three seconds faster than when the volunteers were wearing compression stockings. Since varicose veins are caused by a blood circulation problem, promoting the latter therefore makes it possible to alleviate the condition and the resulting symptoms. Thus, participants who consumed grape extract were less prone to pain.

Proanthocyanidin: an antioxidant found in grape seeds

If the consumption of grape seeds seems effective, one may wonder where this effect comes from. According to the researchers, this phenomenon comes from the presence of proanthocyanidin in grape seeds. It is an antioxidant that would have many properties. Among them, the antioxidant would make blood vessels more elastic to allow blood to flow more freely. He would also have protective and reinforcing properties.

If food brings proanthocyanidin to the body thanks to its presence in many plants, it often remains in insufficient quantity. Thus, the consumption of two servings of grape seed extract daily might allow to have enough proanthocyanidin in the body. Nevertheless, more research needs to be done in order to confirm these results. Indeed, the main limitation of the study is that it was carried out on a very limited panel of individuals. It should therefore be extended to a larger number of participants. Waiting for, the consumption of grape seeds remains positive for health. It is particularly associated with a reduction in cholesterol as well as certain cancers.
