First released in 2013, Grand Theft Auto 5 received widespread critical acclaim and quickly became one of the most popular and best-selling video games of all time. About a year later, Rockstar Games re-released Grand Theft Auto 5 for PS4 and Xbox One, bringing some notable improvements to the game and better graphics. But it’s been nearly a decade since Grand Theft Auto 5’s first launch, so it’s understandable that fans are getting more and more worried regarding GTA 6.
Despite this, Rockstar Games has decided to re-release Grand Theft Auto 5 once once more, this time for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles. This port was once billed as “Expanded and Enhanced”, although that language has apparently been dropped. from marketing promotion as we neared launch. When the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of Grand Theft Auto 5 finally launched, it quickly became apparent that they were basically the same as before, but with better performance and load times. The community did not like this, as the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game were review bombed.
Currently, the PS5 version of Grand Theft Auto 5 has a user rating of 2.8, while the Xbox Series X version has a user rating of 3.0. Almost all of the negative reviews are 0s and 1s, with complaints that Next Gen GTA 5 doesn’t add enough new content and is overpriced.
Some developers and publishers have released next-gen update patches for their games, similar in scope to what Rockstar did with Grand Theft Auto 5, but giving them away for free. Instead, Rockstar is charging fans for their next generation version, and this seems to be a major sticking point for the community. Judging by the deluge of negative feedback, many members of the community are not convinced that the updates justify the asking price.
Rockstar’s decision to charge for the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of Grand Theft Auto 5 proved to be quite controversial, although the company did some things to make the upgrade cheaper. It offered GTA 5 at a discount at launch and also allowed PS5 owners to get Grand Theft Auto Online for free. The last offer is valid until June 14, so anyone who is interested can still do so.
