Grafenwöhr Glows with Christmas Spirit at Annual Tree Lighting

A Holiday of Unity: Grafenwoehr Glows with Christmas Spirit

The festive spirit shone brightly from every twinkling light and joyful heart as the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony brought the Grafenwoehr community together. This year, the festivities offered an extra dash of warmth and holiday cheer, as a vibrant Christmas market, a first for the occasion, added another layer of holiday magic alongside the traditional tree lighting.

Warm aromas of mulled wine and gingerbread wafted through Tower Barracks, mingling with the joyous melodies of traditional and modern Christmas carols, creating a truly magical atmosphere. Children and young people from local American schools beamed with delight, their faces mirroring the dazzling lights that adorned the Christmas tree.

Brigadier General Steven Carpenter and garrison commander Colonel Stephen Flanagan warmly greeted the vast gathering. Their welcoming remarks set the stage for a heartwarming address from City councilor Gerald Morgenstern who expressed a wish that the light of the Christmas tree would transcend the boundaries of Grafenwoehr and bring light and peace to the world.

After heartfelt prayers offered by US military chaplain Chaplain Georgel Oanca and local pastors Daniel Fenk and Thomas Berthold, the ceremony officially commenced.

In his speech, Brigadier General Carpenter extended a meaningful message, urging the community to remember those unable to be with their loved ones during this special time. Colonel Flanagan expressed his sincere gratitude to the myriad volunteers who made the event possible, including military units, civilian staff, school choirs, US veterans, and representatives from the USO, German-American KONTAKT Club, the German-American Joint Committee (DAGA), and Bundeswehr.

A flurry of excitement followed as Santa Claus and Bishop Nicholas arrived, led by the blinking lights and siren of a US fire truck. After a countdown led by children from American elementary schools, the magnificent Christmas tree lit up with dazzling colors, heralding the official start of the holiday season.

The air buzzed with excitement as the two Santa Clauses, accompanied by their elves, distributed gifts to impeccably well-behaved children, filling the air with infectious laughter and joyful squeals. The festive gathering served as a reminder of the shared joy and togetherness that transcends cultural boundaries, uniting the community in celebration.
