Julia Grabher managed to qualify for the hard court tournament in Dubai, worth almost 2.8 million dollars. Austria’s best tennis player defeated French Kristina Mladenovic in the second and final qualifying round on Saturday with 6:3,6:2 and is thus in the main draw of the WTA 1000 event. There the Vorarlberger meets Leylah Fernandez. The 26-year-old suffered a bitter 6-0, 6-1 defeat against the Canadian in January in Auckland.

“A few days ago I wasn’t sure whether I would even be able to compete due to a flu infection. That’s why I’m all the more pleased about the qualification for the WTA 1000 tournament, where all the world’s top players are at the start,” said Grabher via Facebook. She will “definitely need a very good day” against Fernandez. If she manages to win, world number one Iga Swiatek from Poland would be waiting in round two.
