Julia Grabher was eliminated in the second round of the Tennis French Open in Paris. The 26-year-old from Vorarlberg lost 2:6, 3:6 to the highly favored American Coco Gauff on Thursday. Last year’s finalist and number six in the tournament now meets 16-year-old Russian qualifier Mirra Andreyeva.

Grabher got into the game well at the beginning on the Suzanne Lenglen court, the second largest in Stade Roland Garros. The Dornbirner got two breakballs with her strong forehand in the first game, but couldn’t use them. But thanks to two breakballs she managed to get through her first service game. But after that, the 19-year-old sixth in the world rankings found her rhythm and clearly dominated the events. After 32 minutes she got the first set.

In the second set, both players initially had big problems with their service games and each conceded two breaks. Gauff was the first to bring her service through and took a 3-2 lead. With only her second successful service game, Grabher shortened the lead to 3:5, but the favorite then served out and scored her first match point after 1:08 hours. Grabher also lost the second duel with the young US star after losing 1:6.3:6 at the Billie Jean King Cup on hard court in Delray Beach six weeks ago.

With Sebastian Ofner (on Friday against the Italian Fabio Fognini) there is only one ÖTV player in the individual competition. Nevertheless, Grabher was able to start the journey home from Paris satisfied. The Austrian trained by Günter Bresnik, who was last in Rabat in her first WTA Tour final, had reached the second round of a major tournament for the first time, earning 97,000 euros in prize money and will improve to around 55th place in the world rankings.
