Julia Grabher has ended the long dry spell of Austrian women’s tennis in the world rankings for the time being: As the first Austrian since Yvonne Meusburger (last January 19, 2015), i.e. for seven years and almost eight months, with 26-year-old Grabher as 97th, she finally seems another player from the Alpine republic in the top 100 of the WTA ranking. Grabher is the 18th player from Austria who has risen into this elite circle.
“The relief is huge. I’m really proud that I managed to do that,” said Grabher in a press release from the association. “It was a huge goal of mine, the whole year.” The Dornbirner doesn’t want to be satisfied with that. “I still have many more goals and I also believe that there is still much more that can be done. I’ve also beaten WTA top 30 players,” Grabher said.
The best red-white-red player in history is still Barbara Schett, who rose to seventh place in the ranking on September 13, 1999. Barbara Paulus (best placement: 10th), Judith Wiesner (12th) and Sybille Bammer (19th) made it into the top 20.
