GPU sales plummet 19% as Intel has already begun to steal market share from AMD and NVIDIA in discrete graphics cards

According to the statistics of Jon Peddie Research, in the first quarter, shipments of all types of graphics solutions for PC compared to the previous quarter decreased by 6.2% to 96 million units, and in the annual comparison, the drop was 19%. In the discrete graphics segment, Intel announced its claims, which is still able to claim no more than 4-5% of the market, but is already causing inconvenience to AMD in the laptop segment.

According to report Jon Peddie Research, the number of graphics solutions shipped by Intel in the first quarter (embedded and discrete) in the PC segment has consistently decreased by 8.7%. In the case of AMD, the decline was 1.5%, while NVIDIA was able to show growth of 3.2%, although it should be thankful for this high demand for its desktop graphics cards.

In general, the segment of desktop video cards in the first quarter consistently decreased sales volumes by 1.4%. The market for central processors at the same time consistently decreased by 10.8%, and in an annual comparison, the fall was 26.2%. Obviously, the graphics market fell more slowly than the CPU market, so the proportion between GPUs and CPUs in the PC segment in the first quarter reached 129%, which is five percentage points higher than the result of the fourth quarter last year. In other words, there were 1.29 GPUs per CPU, including integrated graphics. Along the way, it is noted that the supply of tablets in the first quarter has consistently decreased by 16.5%.

In the PC graphics market as a whole, Intel’s dominance is being successfully challenged by competitors. In the first quarter of last year, the company controlled 68% of the market, by the fourth quarter the share had decreased to 62%, and in the first quarter of this year it had decreased to 60%. NVIDIA, which defends its own interests in this segment exclusively with discrete graphics solutions, increased its share from 15 to 21% in a year, adding a couple of percentage points in a consistent comparison.

AMD controlled 17% of the PC graphics market in the first quarter of last year, but added a percentage point to the fourth quarter, as it did in the first quarter of this year. Thus, due to the variety of its graphic solutions, AMD was able to strengthen its positions up to 19% and quite noticeably come closer to NVIDIA.

In the discrete segment, however, the advantage remains on the side of NVIDIA, and AMD’s position is beginning to be squeezed by Intel. It is known that while Intel does not supply discrete graphics solutions in the desktop segment, but in the mobile segment, it began to supply its partners with them back in the fourth quarter of last year. Then the company might claim 5% of the discrete graphics market, but by the first quarter, the share was reduced to 4%.

In the first quarter of last year, AMD and NVIDIA shared the market 81:19 in favor of the latter, but in the fourth quarter, Intel began shipping discrete graphics for laptops, deducting one percentage point from AMD and just over three from NVIDIA. The latter finished last year with 78% of the discrete market, but in the first quarter of this year it was able to maintain its position at the same level, while AMD lost another percentage point to Intel, falling back to 17%. Due to rounding, these values do not always add up to 100%, which must be taken into account when analyzing market dynamics.

Jon Peddie Research experts argue that the events of this spring will have a depressing effect on the demand for graphic solutions, but by the end of the year the market will still grow by 2-3%, and in the period up to 2026 the compound annual growth rate will return to the level of 6, 3%. By the end of this period, the share of PCs with discrete graphics in the primary market will reach 46%.
