That really shouldn’t happen: Due to a bug in the current AMD Radeon Adrenalin software, the CPU’s BIOS settings are changed without the user’s consent.
As compared to AMD Tom’s Hardware has confirmed that a GPU driver from the company has changed the settings of a Ryzen CPU in the BIOS – the functionality is actually intended in principle. What is piquant about the story, however, is that the users do not notice anything at all.
„We are aware of an issue in the AMD software suite, which adjusts certain AMD processor settings for some users. We are investigating the issue and will share more information as soon as we are able,” an AMD representative was quoted as saying. Also in Changelog from AMD Radeon Adrenalin 22.4.1 the bug is already listed: “Ryzen CPU overclocking settings can be changed after resetting or importing a profile from Radeon Performance Tuning Options.”
This was preceded by reports of this problem on social networks, which discovered the changed clock speeds in the BIOS rather accidentally. In the search for the source of the error, AMD’s GPU drivers were identified as the culprit.
CPU overclocking should be made easier
Basic CPU overclocking via the GPU drivers was added last year. Users with a Ryzen CPU and a Radeon GPU should be able to manage both in one piece of software, while previously two different programs were required. Thanks to Precision Boost, overclocking can be done in just a few clicks, which means that most of the work, such as adjusting voltage and frequencies, happens fully automatically.
Overclocking will void the warranty
Before performing these steps, however, you will be asked if you are aware of the risks. Overclocking will immediately void the warranty. It is all the more annoying that the current bug processors overclocked without user consent.
