One of the main objectives of the afforestation program in the province of Luanda is the creation of more green spaces for socializing and practicing physical exercise outdoors, promoting community integration and a healthier lifestyle, according to the governor of Luanda. province of Luanda, Manuel Homem

The Government of Luanda launched, last weekend, the capital city’s afforestation program, the first phase of which envisages planting more than 100 trees on Avenida Lueji A’Nkonde, and 10 million throughout the capital city, by 2034.

Thus, the initial phase will be implemented in the municipality of Luanda, its urban districts and communes, with priority being the afforestation of streets, schools and residences in the locality that meet the conditions for the planting of arboreal vegetation identified by the technical team.

According to the governor of Luanda, Manuel Homem, who spoke last Friday, 14th, at the presentation of the PAL program, the second phase will cover the municipalities of Belas, Quiçama, Viana, Cacuaco, Kilamba Kiaxi, Cacuaco, Talatona and its districts and communes.

In subsequent phases, other types of space will be implemented, such as the creation of gardens, play and recreational spaces, nurseries, among others, seeking to involve institutions, public and private entities, in order to guarantee the success and continuity of the program.

The sustainability of PAL will also depend on the installation of five large nurseries in the municipalities of Viana, Cacuaco, Quiçama, Belas, Icolo and Bengo, and around the Cuanza River.

PAL appears to reverse the scenario of tree loss throughout Luanda, encouraging the emergence of more green areas in all municipalities, as well as improving the ecosystem.

It also aims to promote soil health and the various benefits that vegetation can provide to the urban environment, playing a fundamental role in reestablishing the relationship between man and the environment, generating a better quality of life. As well as reducing dust and excess carbon.

“PAL’s goal is to promote the planting of more than 1 million trees by 2027 and around 10 million trees by 2034 in the province, with the participation of society, partners and a greater impact on students from schools of I and II cycles of Luanda”, he said.

For the director, the program presents many benefits for communities, such as improving the health and well-being of the population, increasing and maintaining biodiversity, and reducing environmental, noise and visual pollution.

Also creating more spaces for socializing and exercising outdoors, promoting community integration and a healthier lifestyle, reducing soil erosion, minimizing expenses with repairs and maintenance of urban infrastructures.
