The inauguration of newly elected regional leaders in Indonesia, originally scheduled for February 6, 2025, has been postponed. This decision was made by the Minister of Home affairs, Tito Karnavian, in response to the Constitutional Court’s (MK) decision to advance the reading of interim decisions regarding disputes over the results of the 2024 regional head elections.
“We will hold the inauguration as soon as possible (with a new schedule),” said Tito during a press conference at the Ministry of Home Affairs complex on friday,January 31,2025.
The Ministry of Home Affairs plans to combine the inaugurations of regional heads whose elections were uncontested with those whose victories were challenged but afterward dismissed or discontinued by the Constitutional court. This consolidation aims to enhance efficiency in the process.
“The inauguration for non-disputed MK cases totaling 296 (regional heads) originally scheduled for February 6 will be combined with those that have received a dismissal (decision),” Tito explained.
Initially, the government intended to hold two separate inauguration ceremonies: one for regional heads with undisputed victories and another for those whose lawsuits were rejected by the Constitutional Court. However, President Prabowo Subianto suggested merging the two stages into a single event.
“He believes that if the time difference is not too far apart, for the sake of efficiency, it’s best to combine the inauguration between the non-disputed and those with a dismissal (decision),” said Tito, emphasizing the presidential guidance.
The postponement comes after the Constitutional Court announced that it would begin reading interim decisions on hundreds of regional head election disputes starting on February 4,2025. The Court will initially address 155 disputes, including those from Empat Lawang Regency, Pangandaran, Morotai Island, Klaten, and Padang City. Decisions for the remaining regions are scheduled for the following day.
The General Election Commission (KPU) is prepared to send official letters to respective regional General Election Commissions when the Constitutional Court rejects a candidate pair’s lawsuit. KPU Commissioner Iffa Rosita stated, “The General Election commission has prepared a draft of an official letter based on the Constitutional Court’s decision and ruling so that several regions that decided to be dismissed can join the simultaneous inauguration.”
A definitive timeline for the rescheduled inauguration will be persistent in a meeting involving the executive branch, the General Election commission, and the Election Supervisory Board scheduled for the following Monday. Tito Karnavian confirmed, “The new inauguration schedule of the elected regional heads will be determined in a meeting between the executive branch, the General Election Commission, and the Election Supervisory Board. We will convey the results on Monday.”

Indonesia Postpones Regional Leader inaugurations Amid Election Disputes
Archyde Interview: Tito Karnavian, Minister of Home Affairs, Indonesia
Archyde: Minister Karnavian, thank you for joining us today. The inauguration of newly elected regional leaders has been postponed. Can you shed light on the reasons behind this decision?
Minister Karnavian: Good morning. The decision to postpone the inauguration is directly related to the Constitutional Court’s (MK) timeline. The MK has chosen to expedite the reading of interim decisions concerning disputes over the 2024 regional head elections. We want to ensure a smooth and efficient process, which necessitates aligning the inauguration with the MK’s decisions.
Archyde: You mentioned combining inaugurations. Could you elaborate on this strategy and its benefits?
Minister Karnavian: Absolutely. Initially, we planned two separate ceremonies: one for undisputed victories and another for cases where lawsuits were rejected by the MK. However, President Prabowo Subianto suggested consolidating these events into one, emphasizing efficiency. So, we will now combine the inaugurations of regional heads with undisputed victories and those whose challenges have been dismissed or discontinued by the MK.
Archyde: How will this impact the newly elected leaders?
Minister Karnavian: We understand this postponement may cause some inconvenience, but the new schedule will be announced quickly. We assure the elected officials that their positions are secure, and the inauguration will happen promptly once the legal processes have been finalized.
Archyde: What criteria will be used to determine which inaugurations are combined?
Minister Karnavian: The criteria are straightforward. We will combine inaugurations for regions where the MK has made a final decision, either dismissing a case or supporting the original election result. The General Election Commission (KPU) will be sending official letters to respective regions based on the MK’s rulings, paving the way for the simultaneous inauguration.
Archyde: What message do you want to convey to the public regarding this postponement and the ongoing legal processes?
Minister karnavian: The Indonesian government is committed to ensuring a fair and democratic process. We respect the role of the Constitutional Court in upholding the law and resolving election disputes. We urge the public to remain patient and trust that these procedures will ultimately led to the peaceful and effective transition of leadership at the regional level.
