“It is not possible that an Agricultural Emergency has been declared in many of the regions of our country and Ñuble has been exempt from that,” criticized the regional governor Óscar Crisóstomo, the decision of the central level to exclude the region, despite the impact that the activity has had due to the recent storms and floods.
For this reason, he requested the “Central Government to urgently declare an Agricultural Emergency for Ñuble, mainly to be able to help the different farmers who are currently without any support from the State and in which we also want to join as a Regional Government.”
The authority explained that in a preliminary analysis, “there are regarding 654 people affected in different areas in our region and who today do not have any type of assistance.”
The main damages recorded are due to damage to infrastructure such as sheds and greenhouses, loss of fodder for livestock feed, in addition to the obvious delay in various agricultural tasks, particularly the sowing of winter wheat, and the low development of grasslands, due to flooding or excess water.
The objective of the Agricultural Emergency for Ñuble, explained Crisóstomo, is to have “instruments to support our agriculture that will be affected not only today, but particularly in the harvests, where we will finally see an evident effect and a region like ours, which has had so many critical situations, cannot continue to have them today, without the hand of the State that has to assist the farmers of the Ñuble Region.”
The president of the Farmers Association, Carlos González, shared the urgency that must exist in helping producers who have suffered flooding or damage caused by the wind. “We are an agricultural region, and it is this productive sector that must have more support from the authorities, with resources that arrive in a timely manner to mitigate the effects of these last rains, mainly, the delay of some tasks due to excess water, damage to crops or plantations, which will ultimately lead to low yields, which, of course, complicates matters for farmers,” he said.
According to the reports by Indap, 422 farmers have been affected by damage to greenhouses and warehouses, mainly in the municipalities of Trehuaco, San Ignacio, Yungay and San Carlos; in addition to 232 non-Indap producers registered to date.
