Governor Pedro Pierluisi commented this Monday that there is an “abysmal difference” between the support he has received in his campaign for re-election to the governorship and that which his opponent has had in the primary race of the New Progressive Party (PNP), commissioner resident Jennifer González Colón.
“I really don’t want to pay attention to what others may be saying, or commenting on. I think the difference is abysmal from the point of view of attendance. I don’t have to be abundant. It’s obvious. It is a matter of seeing photographs of both activities,” said Pierluisi, referring to the activity in which he launched his candidacy for re-election, and the one carried out last Sunday by González Colón to make his aspiration for the governorship official.

The governor downplayed the endorsement of González Colón by some PNP figures, including legislators and mayors, and maintained that “there are so few leaders in the party who are saying that (that it is necessary to change). The difference is also abysmal. That is, the vast majority, but it is a very high percentage, basically 29 mayors out of 36 who are identified with my party, the PNP, openly support me for re-election. In the case of the House of Representatives, you’re basically talking regarding 90%, more than 85%. In the case of the Senate, it is 100%.”
“In other words, the difference is abysmal. And these leaders know what the people want. “What the Penépé people want and what all the people of Puerto Rico want,” he insisted. “That is why they see me, never overconfident, but very sure that I will prevail, because the support I have is truly unprecedented in the face of a primary.”

On the other hand, Pierluisi categorically denied that people are participating in his activities because they are forced to do so, as the González Colón camp has openly suggested or indicated, often using the term “tapaítos” in reference to people who, when the moment, they would vote for the resident commissioner even though they have been seen at the governor’s activities.
“That is not right. That’s nonsense. That is not right. What’s more, when I settled, there were no buses, no movement or anything. That was totally voluntary. I invited party leaders to come and witness my filing, which was truly collective, because I am defending all the Penepés. To begin with, I am campaigning for the re-election of all PNP incumbents, without exceptions. And when I reported that it was an incredible thing from the point of view of all the people, the thousands and thousands of people, the clear estimate was like 7,000 people,” he stated.
“All my activities are well attended. It doesn’t matter where I go. This weekend it was on trullas in the center of the Island. Yesterday (Sunday) in Trujillo Alto. You have to see, look at the photos on the networks. It is something that really excites and motivates me,” she added.
Likewise, in reference to the call to join the PNP that González Colón made on Sunday to members of other parties and non-affiliates who wish to maintain the permanent union with the United States, he stated that “our party, the New Progressive Party, should be your option ”.
“The only party that truly defends permanent union with the United States, the only party that demands the equality that we lack as true American citizens, the only party that defends statehood, is the PNP. In other words, this call is not new, this call is permanent. Constantly in public forums, on the platform, all the leaders of our party make that call. “It is a collective call on our part,” commented the governor.
“And in the same way, when they talk regarding the roots of the party, they are more present and relevant today than possibly ever before. Because, what are the postulates of this party? Progress. What have we had in these three years? Progress. Unquestionably. What is the other postulate of the party? The security, the equality that comes with statehood. And what have we been doing these years? Fighting for that ideal. We had a great achievement in the last Congress, and we continue fighting in this one, now before the United States Senate,” he stated.
“We are doing the work. I feel very proud of what we have achieved once morest all odds in these three years, I am talking regarding the PNP administration, and I am going to defend it like a cat on its back, because truly the public servants of this administration have done everything they can to have the achievements we have achieved. There is still a lot to do, and to a large extent that is why I am aspiring to re-election, because that continuity, that stability that comes with an eight-year government is going to be very good for Puerto Rico,” Pierluisi insisted, in statements offered. following a press conference in which the launch of the renewal of the permit application platform was announced.
