In the face of the winter storm that hits the United States, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul warned residents of “epic danger across the state” due to unfavorable weather this weekend.
“We’ve had ice, floods, snow, sub-zero temperatures and whatever Mother Nature might throw at us this weekend,” Hochul said at a press conference on Friday followingnoon.
The official added that there have been more than 100,000 power outages throughout the state.highlighting Erie County with 27,000 and 15,000 in Monroe County.
“We are seeing incredibly dangerous and life-threatening high winds, blinding snowstorms, in real time hitting Western New York,” said the governor, who explained that the region has been hit by both the national storm and snow from lake effect.
Hochul’s statements come following reports of strong winds and rain across the state, so the authorities are preparing for heavy snowfall and record winds.
“If you run out of power, it will be dangerously cold,” warned Jackie Bray, the state’s Homeland Security and Emergency Services commissioner, advising residents dealing with power outages to seek warm shelters provided by some counties.
“Please don’t assume you can take this cold overnight without heating.Bray alerted. “Maybe you can’t.”
Meanwhile, Gov. Hochul noted that winds around the Buffalo Skyway have approached 80 mph, higher than those from the 1977 blizzard.
Hochul further said that Long Island and NYC have seen coastal flooding of up to 3 feet which is beginning to subside for now, although more rain is expected in the area.
for his partHudson Valley, Capital Region, North Country and Southern Tier have seen rain and strong winds. Nine were reported in the last two regions mentioned, but without significant damage.
On the impact of the winter storm on transportation, a flash freeze has affected the western part of the state, and is expected to affect the eastern areas, leading to widespread travel restrictions, Hochul warned.
“The roads are going to be like an ice skating rink, and your tires can’t take that,” said Hochul, who said that in some areas, such as Erie County, the ban on driving commercial vehicles has been extended to all highways.
In the face of flooding, some roads and railway lines were closed on Friday, officials said. Commissioner Bray, for her part, urged commuters to take public transportation instead of driving, stressing that weather should not disrupt those transit options.
