Governor Gildo Insfrán Visits Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy Center: State-of-the-Art Equipment and Cancer Treatment

On the night of Thursday the 23rd, Governor Gildo Insfrán visited the facilities of the Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy Center “Pdte. Néstor C. Kirchner” (CEMENURNK), with the head of the Cabinet of Ministers, Antonio Ferreira.

There, he expressed the relevance of the federal role that this institution fulfills in the region, “by being a model in terms of technology and care” in cancer treatment.

In this context, the president observed the latest equipment that is currently being assembled and installed to complete the diagnostic circuit.

It should be remembered that last year the radiotherapy part was inaugurated, which includes brachytherapy and teletherapy.

With respect to the equipment, it is regarding positron emission tomography or PET and the cyclotron; and regarding this, the engineer Gabriel Martínez, building manager who accompanies everything that is part of the projects of the modern center, provided details to AGENFOR.

In the first place, he said that “PET is used for diagnosis”, explaining that “a patient who is admitted is injected with a radiopharmaceutical, which allows a tomography to be taken where cancer cells are seen more clearly.”

This radiopharmaceutical, “is produced with a team that today is in the Port of Montevideo, arriving in Buenos Aires,” he notified. Therefore, once it reaches the center, “what it will do is produce these radiopharmaceuticals.”

In turn, he noted that “since this project works with nuclear medicine, it has several regulations that are required,” which means that “to comply with each of the stages, you need them to be approved.”

In this sense, “the civil infrastructure is already finished and there is equipment that is 100% installed, remaining to complete the diagnostic circuit with the last two pieces of equipment, which are the PET and the cyclotron,” he specified.

And he explained that, on the one hand, “the PET is already installed and the idea is to be able to put it into operation as soon as possible, complying with the regulations and requirements because this is by and for the people.”

Regarding the cyclotron, which produces radiopharmaceuticals, he added that “there is a concept called radiation, so for reasons of safety and precaution, wall thicknesses are used to neutralize it.”
