(CNN) A government worker in Chhattisgarh, central India, has been suspended for releasing water from a dam to pick up a smartphone he dropped while taking a selfie.
More than 2 million liters of water were released over four days at the Paralkot Reservoir. It was to retrieve a Samsung smartphone that had been dropped by local food inspector Rajesh Bishwas.
When Bishwas went out with a friend on the 21st, he slipped his hand at the observatory and dropped his smartphone.
In a video statement, Bishwas said he had borrowed a diesel pump to release the water into a nearby canal to retrieve the smartphone. He stressed that the release was done with prior approval from the authorities. He explained that he tried to get people to collect it from the reservoir, but it was too much water to reach.
But this view was at odds with the view of his boss. Bishwas was suspended for his abuse of power following he wasted millions of liters of water in the scorching heat. According to his suspension order, the water release was done without a permit.
Bishwas, on the other hand, claims that he released water from the overflowing part of the dam. He was “not in service” anyway, he complains.
