The Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency (Segpres), Álvaro Elizalde, confirmed that the Government has decided to accept the proposal of the Electoral Service (Servel) so that the elections scheduled for October are held on two consecutive days.

This measure, according to Elizalde, responds to the need to guarantee an adequate election, especially following the implementation of mandatory voting.

Elizalde explained that Servel proposed the extension of the elections to two days due to projections that indicate an increase in the number of voters per table and the need to guarantee an efficient electoral process. In this sense, he noted that technical reports and previous experience have been considered, especially during the pandemic, where similar measures were successfully implemented.

“(…) There was consideration of the average time it takes each voter to vote; The decision has been made to present this legal reform,” said Elizalde.

The Government, in response to this request, promised to present a legal reform that would allow the elections to be held on two consecutive days.

The minister stressed that all the technical and specific aspects related to this measure will be resolved in the bill that will be presented in the coming days.

Regarding the implementation details, Elizalde indicated that they will be released once the bill is presented. This measure is presented as a concrete response to the needs raised by Servel to ensure an optimal and transparent electoral process in Chile.
