The federal government is asking the National Bank (BNB) to temporarily maintain Pierre Wunsch in his role as governor. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo sent an official letter to this effect to the National Bank, writes De Tijd on Sunday. The information was confirmed in government circles.
Pierre Wunsch’s mandate expires on January 1. Government partners have not yet agreed on an extension, which threatened to leave the BNB without a governor.
A new mandate for Pierre Wunsch should have been a formalitybut at the last meeting before the Christmas holidays, government leaders failed to agree on a number of issues, which also had the effect of blocking the extension of the mandate of the governor of the BNB.
The absence of a decision on this point creates a certain number of legal uncertainties. Thus, the Governor of the National Bank sits on the Board of Directors of the European Central Bank in a personal capacity and cannot therefore simply be replaced by another person representing the BNB.
Christine Lagarde, head of the ECB, would have accepted a transitional arrangement, on the condition that Pierre Wunsch receives a new mandate as quickly as possible following the holidays. This transitional arrangement consists of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance sending an official letter to the BNB asking it to keep Pierre Wunsch in office.exceptionally” and for “a short period” in order to ensure continuity.
