Local elections
Written by Rainer Ackermann
The governing parties have nominated Alexandra Szentkirályi as the top candidate for mayor of Budapest.
Fidesz spread the news via social media on Thursday evening, just before the March 15 national holiday celebrations. There, the Budapest Fidesz chairman Zsolt Láng briefly explained that Mayor Gergely Karácsony and the people controlled by DK boss Ferenc Gyurcsány had driven the capital into bankruptcy over the last four and a half years and that changes were needed. The governing parties Fidesz and KDNP unanimously supported the candidacy of the previous government spokeswoman for Budapest. Of course, the mayor expects new impetus for the capital, which should develop noticeably under her leadership.
Among the opposition parties, the LMP immediately rejected Alexandra Szentkirályi as the “mouthpiece of Fidesz”. In the rhetoric of the political camp, the mayoral election in Budapest is being misused to arm itself once morest either Viktor Orbán or Ferenc Gyurcsány. Like Gergely Karácsony, Alexandra Szentkirályi is also ideally suited to deepening the rifts. The Green Alternatives also notice that Karácsony is not behaving like a mayor, but is increasingly slipping into the role of an opposition leader who will ultimately have ambitions for the office of Prime Minister once more. As is well known, the LMP would like to see transport and urban development expert Dávid Vitézy in Budapest City Hall.
