In seeking to regulate the sports betting sector, the federal government must begin to limit payment to only Pix and debit cards. The rule will apply to fixed-rate bets (so-called bets) and online games.
The government must also determine that, in the case of Pix, the key used by the bettor must be linked to their personal data.
The government’s intention is to prevent addicted gamblers from getting into credit card debt, as they will only be able to spend the money they have in their bank account.
Another measure implemented by the Ministry of Finance prevents the payment of bets via bank slip. According to department technicians, the intention is to combat money laundering, since this type of payment is used to commit crimes of this kind.
The government’s next step now is to consult the Attorney General’s Office of the National Treasury (PGFN) to find out the legal feasibility of the measure, since several bodies have been working to establish standards for the sports betting market.
The bill that regulates the segment was approved by the National Congress on December 30th and President Lula sanctioned the text with some vetoes.
The main overturned provision determined that bettors would be exempt from paying taxes for winnings obtained from games and bets below R$2,112.
For now, there remain doubts regarding how this market will be monitored, since it is up to the federal government to regulate everything covered in the law.
