President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) signed the decree that reverses the extinction of Ceitec (National Center for Advanced Electronic Technology). The state-owned company is one of the only semiconductor chip manufacturers in Latin America and had been closed during the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

The reversal of the corporate dissolution process of the public company National Center for Advanced Electronic Technology is authorized – says the decree published at the beginning of the week.

With the reversal of the extinction process, the company can return to operations and the government promises an initial investment of R$110 million. The information was confirmed by the Minister of Science and Technology, Luciana Santos, to the GZH portal.

The resumption of Ceitec represents an important opportunity to boost the semiconductor sector, increasing Brazil’s competitiveness and relevance in the global market – said the minister in a statement.

Headquartered in Porto Alegre (RS), Ceitec was nationalized in 2008 with the aim of manufacturing integrated circuits, chips, modules and radio frequency identification tags.

The company is the only one with two “clean rooms” in Latin America, and this environment is essential for chip production. However, with the extinction process initiated by the last government, Ceitec lost a large part of its engineers to foreign chip companies.

The factory has not been operating for two years and eight months, and the company currently has 70 of its 180 workers. Therefore, Ceitec will have to hire 50 to 60 new employees – said Augusto Cesar Gadelha Vieira on the Gaúcha Atualidade program on Rádio Gaúcha.

For now, the chip projects that Ceitec will develop have not yet been defined, but the public company has begun to reconstitute its management team and the return of operations at the factory might happen soon.
