Government recommends Russians not to travel to Georgia

Russian citizens are advised to refrain from traveling to Georgia. Ministry of Economy of the Russian Federation also urged Russians who are already in the country to avoid crowded places, “in particular the historical centers of the cities of Batumi and Tbilisi.”

Organized tourists can contact the Tourist Assistance Association, individual tourists can contact the Russian Interests Section at the Swiss Embassy in Georgia (the Swiss diplomatic mission represents the interests of the Russian Federation in Georgia).

In Georgia, protests continue for several days in connection with the consideration of the bill on foreign agents. Demonstrations are accompanied by clashes between protesters and law enforcement officers. The opposition considers the bill to be pro-Russian, although its initiators deny this. The document was criticized by the European Union and the United States: the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that the project contradicts Tbilisi’s aspirations for Georgia, State Department spokesman Ned Price considers the document “inspired by the Kremlin.” The Kremlin stated that it had nothing to do with the initiative, and reminded that the law on foreign agents has been in force in the United States since the 1930s.

Protesters at the rally also called the bill “Russian”. During the protests, the Russian flag was burned in front of the parliament building. Demonstrators march with Ukrainian flags and sing the Ukrainian anthem.

Due to the protests, the ruling Georgian Dream party decided not to pass the bill. However, the opposition continues to protest and is now demanding the resignation of the government.
