Government recommends its use due to peak respiratory infections

The peak of respiratory diseases worries the health authorities in the department. The invitation that they have shared from the Government and the Asmedas Medical Association is not to neglect the use of the mask.

This was stated by Leopoldo Giraldo, manager for the management of covid-19 in Antioquia, for whom the panorama of respiratory diseases has worsened. “It is important to bear in mind that, due to the amount of virus in circulation, it is necessary to take preventive measures.”

Covid cases have also registered a slight increase. “We went from 126 cases per day three weeks ago and we have already had 186 reports,” Giraldo details. Positivity has also grown: “We went from 9.6 to 10.9 in the weekly cuts.”

The fortune, according to Giraldo, is that although the cases have risen, the severity has not increased. Of the occupancy in the ICU, which has reached 85% in recent days, only five daily cases are due to covid.

“What we do bring is a very high occupancy in pediatric ICUs due to the growth of respiratory diseases,” says Giraldo. The same part is shared by Asmedas, an association that still recommends the use of face masks in certain cases.

Low defenses, having less than two doses once morest covid, those over 50 years of age, respiratory symptoms, a history of comorbidities and interactions in excessively closed spaces when there has been contact with a respiratory disease are sufficient reasons, according to Asmedas, to appeal to the mask

Although the use is not regulated or mandatory, Jorge Iván Posada, spokesman for this medical association, insists on not neglecting this mechanism that was in daily use in recent months.

“We all know that in rainy and cold seasons, people tend to occupy closed spaces more, to crowd together, to take shelter, to close the windows. All this facilitates the transmission of respiratory infections, ”he maintains.
