Government: Poland will tighten inspections of Ukrainian trucks on the border road

“These will be detailed inspections aimed at verifying (…) all transport regulations applicable to Ukrainian carriers,” Polish Infrastructure Minister Alvin Gajadhur said after a meeting with truck drivers.

He added that the carriers would consider softening their protest if these inspections yielded real results.

Polish carriers have been blocking key border crossings with neighboring Ukraine for more than three weeks because they say they face unfair competition from Ukrainian drivers.

Polish transport companies want Ukrainian trucks to be allowed back into the country only with EU permits, which the bloc abandoned after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Warsaw and Kyiv are currently negotiating with the European Union, but the dispute still remains unresolved.

On Wednesday, A. Gajadhur emphasized that Ukraine and EU countries must satisfy the claims of Polish carriers. He added that Warsaw plans to raise this issue at next week’s meeting of EU transport ministers.

According to the minister, Poland would like the discussions to focus on “amendments to the agreement between the European Union and Ukraine on road transport, which would allow for better protection of the interests of the EU road transport industry”.

Earlier on Wednesday, the European Commission condemned Poland’s “almost complete non-participation” in efforts to end protests by Polish carriers.

“I think the situation on Poland’s border with Ukraine is completely unacceptable,” said European Transport Commissioner Adina Valean.
