‘Uise’ challenge centered on doctors’ SNS… Controversy over remarks regarding ‘low level 5th grade official’

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Byeong-gyu = The government is appealing for the return of medical residents who are taking collective action by making a video using lines from dramas in which doctors appear.

According to the government and medical community on the 3rd, the video titled ‘Please come back to us #we_need_U’, uploaded by the YouTube channel of the Korean government account on the 29th of last month, had over 400,000 views by the evening of the 2nd.

‘Doctors are the last hope’ (Good Doctor), ‘I am a doctor. ‘A doctor who saves people’ (Newhart), ‘For patients, it is the biggest thing and most dramatic moment in their lives. Introducing lines such as ‘You meet us at such moments’ (Wise Doctor Life) and ‘The most important thing is to never give up before the patient’ (White Tower), asking residents to “Please come back to the patient.” This is the content.

‘Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim’ said, ‘In the end, what we do is to treat injured and sick people. Two lines were introduced, including ‘The beginning must be there and the end must be there’ and ‘Today and tomorrow, I will stand here like this and continue to wait for the patients who need me.’

Among the comments on the video, there are some that criticize the fact that ‘the problem is that the government pushed too hard to increase the number of medical schools,’ but there were many that reported the unfortunate situation of patients and asked for their return.

After the expansion of medical schools and collective action by medical residents became an issue, a line from the drama ‘Life’ circulated among netizens and became a hot topic online.

A video showing Koo Seung-hyo (Cho Seung-woo), the general manager of a university hospital, criticizing doctors who are taking collective action once morest restructuring, saying, “Are we just like regular office workers?” went viral.

The ‘Uisee Challenge’ is popular among doctors, especially on social media. ‘Uise’ is used as a disparaging expression for doctors in some quarters.

This is done by creating a ‘meme’ (popular Internet content) that combines a doctor and a bird and uploading it, or by replacing the profile picture. It is an image of a bird wearing a doctor’s gown and performing treatment or surgery.

In a briefing on the 19th of last month, Second Vice Minister Park Min-soo of the Ministry of Health and Welfare sarcastically pronounced the word ‘doctor’ as ‘uisae’, a derogatory word, and criticized the government’s push to increase the number of medical schools and its response to residents taking collective action.

Doctor groups claim that Vice Minister Park intentionally used the expression ‘uisae’, but the Ministry of Health and Welfare said, “The part was talking regarding doctors overseas, not Korea, and doctors were mentioned many times during the briefing, but the pronunciation was incorrect only once.” He dismissed it as, “It is excessive to make personal attacks on the Vice Minister for making mistakes due to lack of stamina due to overwork.”

However, this ‘Uisee Challenge’ is not spreading beyond doctors and to the general public. This is because public opinion regarding collective action by majors is not good. In a survey conducted by Gallup Korea on the 13th to 15th of 1,002 adult men and women across the country, 76% were positive regarding increasing the number of medical school students by 2,000.

Recently, criticism has been pouring in on a medical resident participating in a group action who criticized the government in front of reporters and used the expression ‘low level 5th level official’.

According to a media report, this resident held a press conference in front of the Korean Medical Association (KMA) building on the 29th of last month and said, “Please unify the communication channels as even a level 5 secretary is fine.” Later, in a news bulletin board, a level 5 secretary was referred to as ‘ Criticisms such as ‘looking down on the civil service exam’ and ‘having an excessive sense of elitism’ arose regarding what was described as ‘low end’.
