The car is in the crosshairs of the government, which wants to green its taxation and take care of its public accounts. The objective is to make the most polluting cars pay a little more.

Penalizing the purchase of heavy and polluting vehicles by increasing taxes is the government’s credo to encourage greener driving. Since 2022, the weight penalty has been applied to new cars over 1.8 tonnes, and will increase to 1.6 tonnes. The amount of the penalty might be revised upwards. “A little penalty here, a pinch of bonus there and we timidly encourage the population to go electric. Today, it is no longer possible to take small steps“, estimates Geneviève Laferrère, transport specialist for France Nature Environnement.

A gain of 500 million euros for the State

The accumulation of the weight penalty and the penalty in relation to CO2 emissions is set at 50,000 euros: there may no longer be a limit. The government wants to tax company vehicles more and involve motorway companies. “L‘State cannot increase taxes specific to our sector without compensation“, declares one of them. All of these measures might bring in 500 million euros to the State.
