Government Facilitates Marriage Confirmation for Indonesian Citizens in Kuching, Sarawak

The Directorate General (Ditjen) of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) in collaboration with the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, and the Central Jakarta Religious Court held a marriage confirmation for Indonesian citizens (WNI) living in the area.

Quoted from the press release from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Monday (12/8), this activity is aimed at 546 Indonesian couples who are married religiously in Malaysia, but do not yet have official marriage documents.

Director General (Dirjen) of Dukcapil Teguh Setyabudi appreciated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu) which took the initiative to hold the Marriage Confirmation Program for Indonesian citizens at 4 Indonesian Representatives in Malaysia. The 4 Indonesian Representatives are the Indonesian Consulate General in Kota Kinabalu with 250 married couples; the Indonesian Consulate General in Penang with 40 married couples; the Indonesian Consulate General in Kuching with 176 couples; and the Indonesian Consulate General in Johor Bahru with 80 couples.

“We also express our gratitude and appreciation to the Indonesian Consulate General in Kuching Sarawak Malaysia, the Central Jakarta Religious Court, and the Marriage Registrar of the Indonesian Consulate General in Kuching who have worked together to realize the presence of the state in the community in the form of providing marriage documents through the determination of marriage validation and the issuance of marriage books,” said Teguh.

Teguh asserted that the document provides access for the public to obtain population documents as per their civil status. “Especially population biodata with registered marital status and birth certificates as children of a married couple,” he explained.

Teguh said that in the last 5 years, the Directorate General of Dukcapil, Ministry of Home Affairs has started implementing the Absolute Responsibility Statement (SPTJM) policy. This letter is to facilitate the issuance of birth certificates for children from couples whose marriages have not been registered at the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA) or the Dukcapil Service, but have been recorded on the family card with married status.

“This policy has been recognized as an innovation with national leverage for efforts to increase birth certificate ownership and has received the TOP 45 award in the Sinovik event from the Ministry of PANRB,” said Teguh.

The marriage validation activity aims to provide legal certainty for couples whose marriages have not been officially registered. Couples who participate in the marriage validation will have their marriage legalized by the Central Jakarta Religious Court and will be given a marriage book by the marriage registrar from the Indonesian Consulate General in Kuching.

Teguh added that this activity is part of the government’s commitment to provide the best service to Indonesian citizens abroad. “With this marriage confirmation activity, we hope to provide legal certainty and facilitate Indonesian citizens’ access to various government services,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Consul General (Konjen) Kuching R. Sigit Witjaksono stated that this activity is part of the government’s efforts to protect the rights of Indonesian citizens abroad. He hopes that the marriage itsbat activity can continue to be carried out periodically to ensure that all Indonesian citizens abroad have valid marriage documents that are recognized by the state.

“We want to ensure that every Indonesian citizen, including those abroad, has a valid marriage document that is recognized by the state,” he said. (H-3)
