Government expands network of mammographers in the interior of the country and aims at preventive controls

Asunción, IP Agency.- The Minister of Health, María Teresa Barán, pointed out the importance of preventive studies for the effective treatment of breast cancer, the main cause of death from cancer in women. To this end, the health portfolio is promoting the expansion of the mammography network throughout the country.

«The statistics are very sad; “In Paraguay, 10 women per week die as a result of breast cancer,” the minister said in statements to the press during the event for October 19, International Day to Fight Breast Cancer.

The health portfolio has 32 new mammograms for distribution throughout the national territory and a total of 56 nationwide. “Today we can say that in all departments we have mamogrades,” said the minister.

He pointed out that early diagnosis of stage I and II cancer has a 90% chance of survival and that is what the Ministry of Health points out.

This means that the health system will double the number of mammograms available for detection, Barán highlighted.

Mammography distribution

In the Capital and the Central department, 11 mammographs were installed, while the departments of Alto Paraná and Canindeyú, from having only one team, will now have five and three, respectively.

«In Concepción we did not have any mammography, now we are going to have three teams. We are even going to have a specialized team so that mastologists can do the targeted biopsy,” explained Barán.

The installation of this equipment is already underway and most of it is expected to be operational before 2025.

In addition to expanding the network of mammographers, work is being done on other prevention pillars such as the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. This vaccine applied to adolescent women starting this year also includes men.
