Government declares the Mayan Train as a work of national security – El Financiero

The federal government determined, in a session of the Security Council, that the Mayan Train is a work of national security to be able to resume works on Section 5currently suspended by order of a judge, informed Javier May, general director of the National Tourism Fund (Fonatur), in an interview with the media prior to the commemorative ceremony for the death anniversary of Benito Juárez, held at the National Palace.

“There was a declaration from the National Security Council, where the work is a priority. Yes (due to the presidential agreement to decree national security works), in the Security Council session they determined that it is a national security work for the railways, and that the interested parties are the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of the Interior They were the ones who determined that the work be restarted”.

The person in charge of the work was questioned if this did not violate the definitive suspension of Mayan train granted by a Yucatan judgein resolution to amparos filed by environmentalists and activists gathered in the group Sélvame del Trenwhich he rejected.

“No, none, no amparo is violated, we do not intervene, it is not Fonatur that called, the one that is carrying out the work is the Ministry of the Interior and the Secretary of Security.

He affirmed that at the moment the judge has not given a date, because on behalf of Fonatur the Environmental Impact Statement has already been presented, and the arguments have been presented, for which it is only waiting for the suspension to be “lifted”.

Can the Mayan Train affect the T-MEC?

The commercial representation of the United States said that the Mayan Train may violate the environmental article of the Mexico-EU-Canada Treaty (T-MEC). The foregoing was said on July 11 in a statement, for which the US body is following up on the legal proceedings once morest the work of the López Obrador administration for supposedly not having the Environmental Impact Statements.
