Government analyzes “different proposals” to deal with rising electricity bills – La Discusión

The Minister of the General Secretariat of Government, Camila Vallejo, stated this Monday that the Executive is analyzing “different proposals” to address the controversial increase in electricity bills, reported last week.

“Freezing electricity rates has generated a debt for the State that is unsustainable. In other words, every day that passes, millions of dollars have to be paid; therefore, the unfreezing was part of the legislative debate last year and then its vote had a fairly transversal approval,” said the spokesperson for La Moneda.

Vallejo stressed, however, that “the Government is open to the various proposals that have been put on the table and is analyzing them from both the legislative and fiscal point of view, because, I insist, any measure in this regard, to alleviate the effects or in terms of subsidies, are resources that the State does not have today and we have to see how they are generated in order to alleviate the impact on families.”

The controversial measure has had as its main target the Minister of Energy, Diego Pardow, who is accused of not having provided timely information on the real effect that the increase would have, which might reach an increase of up to 50% in bills in the coming months.

The targeted subsidy to mitigate the impact today considers 40% of the most vulnerable households.

“We do not rule out, and we are evaluating, an interpellation of the minister,” said deputy Henry Leal (UDI). The idea was raised yesterday by his colleague Frank Sauerbaum, head of the National Renewal Party (RN) group.

“It was necessary to unfreeze, yes, but not at this cost. Here the minister, when the law was discussed, did not provide all the information and today this bad decision, this bad public policy, has to be corrected. The Government has the obligation to take measures to increase coverage and benefit the middle class and small and medium-sized businesses before the electricity bill arrives in July,” said the union parliamentarian.
