Government Agreement on Nuclear Reactor Extension & Waste Disposal: Latest Updates and Funding Revealed

2023-07-21 18:58:06

A few weeks ago, the federal government and the energy giant managed to agree on the extension of the two nuclear reactors of Doel 4 and Tihange 3 and on the price for waste disposal. A provision of 10.5 billion euros had been provided for this purpose, to which will therefore be added 4.5 billion euros. In addition, a provision of 8 billion euros has been planned for the dismantling of the seven nuclear reactors, under the responsibility of Engie. This figure might still vary, depending on the three-year estimate of the Nuclear Utilities Commission.

The Council of Ministers validated Thursday the release of 17 million euros for the pre-financing of studies and preparatory work for the extension of the two nuclear reactors, thus covering studies and activities until the end of October. A first pre-financing for the period January-July 2023 had already been granted by the government.

The Federal Nuclear Control Agency (AFCN) also announced on Thursday that it had transmitted its nuclear safety expectations for the restart to Engie-Electrabel.
