Traffic was blocked on Saturday morning for a length of ten kilometers in front of the northern portal of the Gotthard tunnel. The reasons for this large volume of traffic on the north-south axis were not clear. The plug cleared up in the afternoon.

From early in the morning, vehicles began to accumulate between Erstfeld (UR) and Göschenen (UR). During the morning, the plugs lengthened until they reached a length of ten kilometers at 10:30 a.m., according to indications from the TCS. The wait was estimated at one hour and 40 minutes.

Experts say they are surprised by such a large traffic jam in the Gotthard on a normal weekend. No particular incident, such as an accident or a deviation, was noted on the route, indicates the Viasuisse road information service to Keystone-ATS.

A possible explanation could be the school holidays in some German Länder, which started on Tuesday. However, such a development was not expected. Traffic was also overloaded to the south, between Quinto and the Gotthard tunnel. The length of the traffic jams reached up to six kilometers in the afternoon, which corresponded to a waiting time of up to an hour.
