Gottfried & Sons: A small institution closes

The concept store in the Jewish Museum Vienna will be closed at the end of January. However, operator Elisabeth Gottfried would like to continue to devote herself to Jewish design.

For the fifth birthday of her shop a few days ago, Elisabeth Gottfried had to surprise her regular customers with bad news: At the end of January she will be running Gottfried & Söhne, the shop she founded in 2018 in the Jewish Museum in downtown Vienna, close.

Since then, Gottfried has received “incredibly nice letters” from visitors, “it really was five great years. My idea of creating a meeting place here worked out well,” says Gottfried from the bright blue seating area in her shop with a view of Dorotheergasse. She didn’t want to “whine too much about it” either, but: The Corona period “simply shot down the project, like with many other individual entrepreneurs,” says the art historian.
