Gotham Knights developers change Barbara Gordon’s biography in response to criticism

Creators Gotham Knights responded to criticism of the image of Barbara Gordon and made changes to the description of the character. The creative director spoke regarding this during a Q&A session. Patrick Redding.

Players have noticed that Barbara Gordon’s biography mentions “post-injury training” required to “return to duty as Batgirl”.

The developers did not specify the cause of the injuries, however, in the comics, the Joker drove a bullet into the spine of Barbara Gordon, as a result of which she ended up in a wheelchair. Some fans have criticized Warner Bros. for the description on the site, stating that the imagery used, where the character “overcomes” their physical problems through heroic training and strong determination, was described too superficially.

At Warner Bros. took into account the criticism and changed some of the wording in the description of the character. Redding said the team worked with AbleGamers to look at different types of spinal injuries and ways to restore mobility. At Gotham Knights, Barbara underwent several surgeries followed by extensive physical therapy and a course of painkillers.

Batgirl’s rehabilitation will continue in-game and be observed throughout the campaign, during which users will see how Barbara performs various exercises and wears clothes that will have “back supports built in”.

Gotham Knights Coming October 25th to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
