Google’s new AI tool that can turn the dice on football matches

Google of the Artificial intelligence ‘s department ‘DeepMind’ has created a tool that the company claims is a Football Can strategize like an expert and predict the outcome of corner kicks.

DeepMind has previously used its artificial intelligence to defeat human champions in the complex board game ‘Go’, as well as professional gamers in the video game StarCraft II.

Google’s London-based AI division unveiled its new tool ‘Tactic AI’ on Tuesday following three years of working with Liverpool Football Club staff.

A blog posted regarding the technology states that the tool uses a combination of creative and predictive artificial intelligence to achieve ‘state-of-the-art results’.

The blog post added: ‘Tactic AI demonstrates the potential of artificial intelligence-assisted techniques to revolutionize sports for players, coaches and fans. Our system allows coaches to model replacement player sets according to match situations and thus directly assess the potential outcomes of replacement players.’

According to a study detailing the technology, during a blind test the strategy generated by the artificial system was no different from the human-designed strategy.

The setup suggested by the Tactic AI was also preferred 90 percent of the time compared to the human-designed strategy.

Despite this success, DeepMind said the tool is not intended to replace human coaches, but to assist them.

DeepMind said in a statement: ‘The model built by Tactical AI allows human coaches to redesign the strategy of corner kicks to improve the likelihood of outcomes such as shots for defensive setups. reducing the likelihood of attempt.’

According to the company: ‘This proposed adjustment allows coaches to more quickly identify key patterns as well as players critical to the success or failure of a strategy.’

Trained on data from 7,176 corner kicks across the 2020 and 2021 Premier League seasons, the system offers coaches a way to simulate and analyze different player setups for routines.

In addition, DeepMind says it can be further developed to offer general insights into human psychology, which might be useful for fields such as robotics and traffic coordination, along with strategy in other sports.

The research has been published in the scientific journal Nature Communications in a paper titled ‘Tactical AI: NAI Assistant for Football Tactics’.
