Google would charge for the use of AI

LONDON (EFE).— Google is considering charging for the use of search services managed by artificial intelligence (AI), the Financial Times reported yesterday.

The media highlights that the decision by the technology giant would mark a shift in its business model, as it would be the first time that it would charge for any of its main products.

The alleged strategy also shows that Google is still trying to deal with a technology that, according to the newspaper, threatens its advertising business, almost a year and a half following the appearance of ChatGPT.

Among the options being considered by the multinational is the incorporation of search functions generated by artificial intelligence into its subscription services, which already offer access, for example, to the Gemini assistant in Gmail and Docs.

Citing three sources familiar with the plan, the paper said Google’s technicians were already developing the technology needed to implement the new services, although management has not yet decided whether or when it will go ahead.

In this scenario, its popular core search engine would remain free, although advertising would remain on the results pages, even for paying customers.

The difference, the outlet notes, is that Google is for the first time forcing users to pay for extra features added to a tool that until now has been financed through advertising.
