Google unveils its new Pixel 9 Pro, Pro XL and Pro Fold

Surprise, rather than the fall, Google has moved up the release of its new Pixel products to August, as well as its new Nest thermostats and Google TV Streamer streaming players.

With Google already releasing pre-announcement videos for the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL phones, the novelty effect has worn off somewhat.

There’s one thing you can be sure of, Google is spicing up its devices and many features with Gemini artificial intelligence sauce.

First observation, the video and images from a pre-order page published by Google confirm the new design of the camera which abandons the edge-to-edge bar format in favor of a more classic shape.

From better selfies to AI editing tools, here’s what’s new across the cameras and photography features of the latest Pixel phones.

In short

  • Pixel 9 cameras: Improved photos, videos, and editing features.
  • Improved lenses for sharper images, even in low light.
  • New HDR+ imaging pipeline for true-to-life photos.
  • Super Res Zoom Video for high quality videos with up to 20x zoom.
  • Add Me, Reimagine, Auto frame, Night Sight in Panorama, Zoom Enhance and Made You Look features make creative editing easy.

They feature better lenses for sharper photos and videos, even in low light.

You can take group selfies with a wider field of view and capture high-quality videos with Super Res Zoom video.

The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL share the same triple rear camera system with a new 48MP 5x telephoto lens featuring an upgraded sensor that improves focusing for sharper images, even in low light.

Both phones also feature a new 42-megapixel front-facing camera, which helps deliver sharper, brighter photos in low light. Plus, with a wider field of view, group photos will be easier, according to Google.

Conversations with Gemini Live

Gemini Live enables conversational exchanges between users and AI, which reacts more realistically to human speech and, ideally, reacts more like a human in turn.

Google Gemini can now generate emails from a conversational voice message, as demonstrated on X #MadebyGoogle .

Earlier at the start of the event, it was necessary three attempts to the host to demonstrate Gemini’s abilities to insert a friend’s arrival into her calendar. Fun!

Add me to the photo (Add Me)

Many photo features are getting a big boost from AI innovations.

For example, Add Me makes sure no one gets left out. Take a group photo first, then swap places with someone and take a second photo with you. Pixel uses real-time augmented reality to guide the second photographer to frame the photo to match the composition of the first. Pixel then merges the two images so that everyone is in one photo, including the photographers.

Pixel 9 Pro Fold

Google’s second foldable phone doesn’t reinvent the screen – it just makes it slightly larger, up to 8 inches when fully opened. It’s thinner, with a larger external display and camera improvements in line with the rest of the Pixel 9 range. It’ll carry a hefty $1,799 price tag in the US.
