Google and Open AI sign EU artificial intelligence pact, avoiding Meta or X

Brussels, Sep 25 (EFE).- More than a hundred companies – including Google, Microsoft, Open AI and Amazon – have joined the voluntary pact promoted by the European Commission to develop artificial intelligence that respects ethical principlesThe institution reported this Wednesday.

However, major technology companies such as X, Meta or Apple have not done so. The last two have even stopped the introduction of their artificial intelligence systems into the European market, claiming that they have doubts about the new laws that the European Union has approved to regulate the sector.

«The pact on artificial intelligence is a voluntary instrument. Of course, we invite all companies to participate. The figure will increase in the future, but they are private companies and whatever decision they make, it is up to them to make it.”said the Community Executive’s Internal Market spokesperson, Thomas Regnier.

Brussels has promoted the pact to promote ethical and responsible development of this technology and to help companies adapt to the EU artificial intelligence law, which came into force last August, but whose definitive deployment will not occur. until 2026.

Among the signatories, there are also companies such as Qualcomm, IBM, the Spanish Telefónica, Vodafone, Orange, Nokia, Mastercard, Airbus or Booking, according to the list provided by the Commission.

Brussels recalled that at the same time that it has promoted this pact, it has also promoted an industrial initiative for companies to develop their artificial intelligence systems.

The pact will be applied in parallel to the gradual deployment of the artificial intelligence law, which allows or prohibits the use of technology depending on the risk it poses to people and which will come into force in phases.

Starting in February, artificial intelligence systems for biometric categorization based on political, religious, philosophical or political beliefs will be prohibited.

Systems that rate people based on their behavior or personal characteristics, nor artificial intelligence capable of manipulating human behavior, cannot be used either.

Systems to expand or create facial databases captured indiscriminately through the Internet or audiovisual recordings will also be prohibited, among others.

In August of next year, the transparency criteria that generative artificial intelligence systems must meet will come into force, another of the main points of discussion in the midst of the rise of programs like ChatGPT.

These models will have to make it clear whether a text, a song or a photograph has been generated through artificial intelligence and guarantee that the data used to train the systems respects copyright.
