Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to deliver relief goods to the rain-affected places.

Shahbaz Sharif while speaking in the meeting regarding the power sector said that rains are happening in the country which will fill the dams and increase the hydropower but there has been a lot of loss of life. Communicate together and deliver relief materials to the affected areas together.

He said that we have to stop electricity theft in the country, it is a big challenge, which will be dealt with in a proper manner, there has been good progress in this regard in Punjab, other provinces will also cooperate in this. The transmission system is in a very bad condition, no matter how much effort and investment is done to improve it, without fixing it, you can generate as much electricity as you want, if the transmission system is not good, then all the investment will be wasted So bring in world-class consultants from wherever you can find them so that they come and give reports and we move in this direction rapidly.

Shahbaz Sharif said to do something with the surplus electricity at marginal cost, promote hydropower, review the proposal of Chairman WAPDA regarding Diamar Bhasha, finally we have to come to alternative energy, the crude oil tanker mafia in the country. Like a leech, it is squeezing the country’s wealth.

The Prime Minister further said that 27 billion dollars worth of oil is exported to meet the needs of electricity and transport. Controlled by alternative energy projects, it will benefit in the long run, reducing imports and saving dollars.

According to the statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office, the first round of the high-level meeting regarding the power sector under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif was held in Islamabad today. Federal Ministers Ishaq Dar, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Ahad Khan Cheema, Attaullah Tarr, Sardar Owais Ahmad Khan Leghari, Dr. Mossadegh Malik, former Minister of Electricity Muhammad Ali, member of the National Assembly Bilal Azhar Kayani, Rana Ehsan Afzal, Salman Ahmed and others were present in the meeting. High officials attended.

The meeting was briefed regarding the details, government initiatives and proposals regarding the current production and transmission system of the electricity sector and also informed regarding the future electricity consumption and demand.

The meeting was further informed that shifting the imported coal-fired projects to local coal would not only save valuable foreign exchange but also reduce the cost per unit by Rs.2 per consumer.

The Prime Minister directed to complete all the steps within a specified period and said that the coal-fired power plants should be shifted to local coal. The electricity transmission system should be improved. In the future, only clean and low-cost hydropower and renewable plants will be installed in the country.

The meeting was also briefed on the 600 MW solar power project under external investment.

The Prime Minister issued instructions to the relevant authorities to speed up the steps regarding external investment in this solar energy project and said that proposals should be prepared for better utilization of the existing excess capacity of electricity in the industries. The electricity tariff should be reduced so that it is possible to supply electricity to the industrial consumers at a lower cost.

He said that the establishment of grid stations near big industries should be ensured for industrial development and increase in exports. The process of privatization of such power plant GENCOs which are active should be accelerated. The auction process of such power plant GENCOs which are inactive and defunct should be expedited.

The Prime Minister said that all possible steps are being taken to reduce the per unit price of electricity for the common man. To reduce the revolving credit of the power sector, reforms are underway on the priority basis of the sector.
