Ahead of CES, LG made a notable announcement. From 2024, televisions equipped with webOS will benefit from updates for five years. This approach, quite new in the field of televisions, contrasts with usual practices, notably those of Samsung and LG, where televisions generally kept the software version of their year of release without benefiting from subsequent updates.

On smartphones and PCs, updates are standard, but in the world of televisions, it’s a big step forward. Consumers can expect their LG TV to not only remain functional, but also to regularly add new features.

Samsung, for its part, is not left out. Although it was not mentioned in the CES 2024 press release, AVForums media reveals a similar change. The brand is preparing to offer software updates for its televisions under Tizen.

However, Samsung cautions that not all new features will be consistently available for every TV model, with hardware and performance limitations potentially playing a role. We also do not know the list of televisions that will benefit from this change nor the expected duration of support. Samsung Electronics seems to be reacting to the announcement of its competitor; there are still few details on this subject.

What’s new in Tizen 8

This year, Samsung announced Tizen 8. The new system introduces profile management features. Each member of the household can personalize the TV interface according to their preferences, with content recommendations tailored to their tastes. Three main tabs appear on the screen : « For you », « Direct » et « Apps ». For you displays the most recently used sources and recommended content. Direct offers access to currently broadcast programs and a TV guide. Appsis an app store.

Tizen 8 is also present two new menus : Daily+ and Now+. Daily+ allows quick access to the SmartThings dashboard to manage connected devices in the home, and a Workspace mode to connect to a remote PC or Microsoft 365, transforming the TV into a teleworking station. Now+ displays widgets (weather, traffic, news) and security cameras, as well as information related to household members, such as birthdays or appointments. All these functions are accessible via voice command.
