MEXICO CITY (EFE).— Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s virtual president-elect, yesterday ruled out that Gonzalo Alfonso López Beltrán, son of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, would be part of her government, as has been speculated in recent days.
“Gonzalo has no intention of working in the Government of the Republic,” said the future president, who will assume the presidency on October 1.
López Beltrán caused controversy last week following being seen entering Sheinbaum’s transition house, when the future president was holding a closed-door meeting with Jesús Esteva, who will be the next head of Mexico’s Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation.
Claudia said that the president’s son only went to greet her and congratulate her on her electoral victory on June 2, since they had not had “the opportunity to talk.”
He also said that it was just a “coincidence” that Esteva was in his transition office at the time, located in the Iztapalapa municipality.
The future president also stressed that she has always had a very close relationship with López Obrador’s family.
“I have known the president’s children since they were very young, so there is affection, that has already come, but he is not going to work in the Government,” said Claudia.
On the other hand, the future president, who will be the first woman to hold the office in Mexico, reported that she will continue to announce the next members of her cabinet, which until now has gender parity.
The former head of the Government of Mexico City (2018-2023) said that this week she will announce the heads of the secretariats of Labor, Culture, Tourism and the Office of the Presidency.
Meanwhile, Sheinbaum Pardo added that the appointments will continue until the end of September with the Navy and Defense secretariats. “The Sedena and Semar will be until September, the last weeks,” she confirmed, following warning in previous conferences that these appointments would be the last.
