González Urrutia thanks Chile for its call to “respect” democracy in Venezuela

The standard-bearer of the largest opposition coalition in the country, Edmundo González Urrutia, thanked the Chilean government on Friday for its call to respect democracy and the will of the Venezuelan people, in reference to the presidential elections, in which Santiago recognized González’s victory and not Nicolás Maduro, ratified as president by the electoral body.

“I appreciate Chile’s call to respect the will of the Venezuelan people,” González Urrutia said on social media X.

He also said that “transparency and integrity in the electoral results are essential to protect democracy in the region,” at a time of international pressure in which several countries consider the electoral body’s announcement fraudulent, while other governments, such as Brazil, Mexico and Colombia, are attempting a negotiation between the parties in light of the post-electoral situation.

Through X, Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren praised the preliminary report of the panel of experts of the United Nations Organization (UN), which concluded that the results announced by the National Electoral Council (CNE) lack the “transparency and integrity that are essential to hold credible elections,” something that the Venezuelan government rejected, considering that they spread lies.

The main opposition coalition insists on González Urrutia’s victory, according to the “83.5%” of the minutes that it says it obtained through witnesses and members of the polling station in the elections, something that the Maduro government considers false documents, although the UN panel of experts concluded that these papers “exhibit all the security devices of the original results protocols.”

Nineteen days after the presidential elections, the CNE has still not published the disaggregated results and electoral records, which has been questioned by numerous countries and organizations, which are calling for transparency on the part of the institution.
