González Urrutia rejects the Supreme Court ruling confirming Maduro’s electoral victory

Caracas, Aug 22 (EFE).- The standard-bearer of Venezuela’s largest opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), Edmundo González Urrutia, on Thursday rejected the ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), which confirmed Nicolás Maduro’s victory in the presidential election, since – he said – “sovereignty resides non-transferably in the people,” citing the Constitution.

“Sovereignty resides untransferably in the people. The organs of the State emanate from popular sovereignty and are subject to it. They will not usurp the truth,” wrote the opposition member, considered the winner of the elections by the PUD and various national and international organizations, on the social network X.

The TSJ assumed the “validation” of the election results, at the request of Maduro, who filed an appeal for protection that was never heard and by which the 10 former presidential candidates were summoned to the TSJ, although González Urrutia declined to attend, considering that verification is not the responsibility of the legal institution, but of the National Electoral Council (CNE).

The Electoral Chamber of the TSJ validated “the results of the presidential election of the 28th issued by the CNE,” said the president of the TSJ, the Chavista Caryslia Rodríguez, who led the judicial expert report, before the high authorities of the State and diplomatic representatives.

The Supreme Court’s decision was expected by González Urrutia and other opponents, who consider that the court is “biased,” contrary to what Maduro claims, who defends his impartiality.

Hours before the ruling was issued, the PUD candidate had warned that the court decision “will only aggravate the crisis” that the country is experiencing after the controversial victory that the electoral body awarded to Maduro.

The opposition leader also said that Venezuelans are not willing to “give up” “freedom” or the “right to change in peace to live better” after the presidential elections, in which the PUD believes that its standard-bearer won, according to “83.5% of the minutes” that it says it has gathered through witnesses and table members, documents that the Government describes as “false.”
