Edmundo González Urrutia met this weekend with representatives of the Help Venezuela Platform, a group made up of Venezuelans in Spain, to exchange opinions on the political crisis in the country.
Manuel Rodríguez, a member of the platform, expressed on social media that the meeting allowed him to hear González Urrutia’s perspectives and reaffirmed the conviction that “we are on the right path to recover democracy and freedom.”
The political and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela has led to the migration of more than 7.7 million people, with the majority being hosted in Latin America and the Caribbean. However, in the first half of 2024, more than 44,000 Venezuelans arrived in Spain.
González Urrutia, recognized as the winner of the presidential elections by the opposition based on the records in its possession, has been in Spain since September 8, receiving the support of the Senate, the Congress of Deputies and the European Parliament as president-elect of Venezuela.
Other meetings
The former presidential candidate of the Unitary Platform has also held meetings with former Spanish presidents such as Felipe González, Mariano Rajoy and José María Aznar, who have expressed their support for him in the face of the Venezuelan situation.
The diplomat said he had to leave Venezuela due to pressure and threats from senior government officials.
Criticism of possible involvement of members of the Spanish cabinet, denied by González Urrutia, has generated controversy and led the Popular Party to demand the resignation of officials such as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares.
