González Urrutia believes that the law on NGOs is a “dangerous instrument of censorship”

Caracas, Aug 19 (EFE).- The standard-bearer of the largest opposition coalition in Venezuela, Edmundo González Urrutia, said on Monday that the Law on Supervision, Regulation, Action and Financing of NGOs and Social Organizationsapproved by Parliament, It is a “dangerous instrument of censorship.”

“We reject the approval of the Law on the Supervision of NGOs, a dangerous instrument of censorship and arbitrariness that violates human rights and hinders the path we have set out for a democratic transition,” said the standard-bearer of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) in a message published on X.

On Thursday, the Venezuelan parliament, controlled by Chavez, approved the law that provides for the judicial dissolution of NGOs that violate the provisions established in the law.

Under the new law, NGOs are prohibited from receiving financial contributions for political organisations or from making financial contributions to such organisations, as well as from promoting “fascism, intolerance or hatred”.

It also establishes as grounds for dissolution of these associations the failure to comply with these prohibitions, declared by judicial decision, as well as the failure to pay any fine imposed “in accordance with this law, once the available judicial remedies have been exhausted.”

Meanwhile, the NGO Provea said that the approval of this text legalizes the “persecution of civil society that has denounced abuses and accompanied thousands of victims in dark times in the country’s history.”

On August 13, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, asked the Venezuelan government to reject this legislation, as well as a project to regulate social networks, due to the negative impact they would have on human rights and democracy in general.

“I urge the authorities not to adopt these or other laws that undermine the civic and democratic space in the country,” Türk said.
