González promises a country “where no one is persecuted for thinking differently”

The presidential candidate for the Democratic Unitary Platform, Edmundo González, met this Friday with the relatives of political prisoners in Venezuela and reiterated that he will free the “political prisoners” if he wins the presidential elections on July 28.

During the meeting that took place in Caracas, González thanked the family members present for letting him hear their testimonies about the serious human rights violations that they and their loved ones have suffered during these years.

In addition, the candidate of the largest opposition coalition also expressed that his “commitment is firm: a country where no one is persecuted for thinking differently. “We will release the political prisoners.”

At the meeting, relatives of “political prisoners” showed photos of their imprisoned relatives, several of them accused of alleged plans to invade Venezuela and overthrow Nicolás Maduro.

Some of these relatives delivered a document to the Prosecutor’s Office in Caracas to denounce the “inhuman” conditions of confinement and that “dissidence is persecuted and criminalized for thinking differently.”

The NGO Foro Penal reported this Tuesday that they have registered this year “114 arbitrary arrests for political purposes, of which 102 arrests are related to the team or tours” of González Urrutia and the anti-Chavista leader María Corina Machado, who supports this candidate.
